Floor Plans: The Listing Feature Buyers Keep Asking For

Zillow survey data shows 79% of prospective buyers are more likely to view a listing with a floor plan they like - and most regret wasted showings without one.

Photos show buyers what a home looks like. What they cannot show is the question every buyer asks next: how does this place actually flow? Floor plans answer it - and survey data from Zillow shows buyers actively reward listings that include one.

The Demand Is Measurable

Zillow's consumer survey data is unambiguous: 79% of prospective buyers are more likely to view a listing if it includes a floor plan that appeals to them. The same research surfaced a striking regret stat: more than half of prospective buyers said they had wasted time visiting properties they would have skipped entirely if they had seen the floor plan beforehand. And three out of four prospective buyers recognize the value of a dynamic floor plan that links each photo to where it was taken in the home.

NAR's buyer research backs this up from the other side. In the 2025 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, 57% of buyers who used the internet rated floor plans a “very useful” website feature - third behind only photos (81%) and detailed property information (77%), and ahead of virtual tours and videos.

Why Floor Plans Convert Browsers Into Showings

  • They kill the unanswered question. “Is the primary suite upstairs?” “Is the kitchen open to the living room?” Every layout question a buyer cannot answer is a reason to keep scrolling instead of booking a showing. A floor plan resolves all of them in one glance.
  • Nobody wants to waste a Saturday. Zillow's regret finding matters because it is the buyer's own experience: people remember touring homes that were wrong for them, and they increasingly filter with floor plans to avoid repeating it. A listing without one is asking buyers to take a risk they no longer have to take.
  • They pre-qualify in both directions. Buyers who book after studying the floor plan already know the home fits. Sellers get fewer but better showings - and the looky-loo traffic that never converts simply never books.

The Remote-Buyer Stack

In the Tahoe basin and Truckee, where a large share of buyers shop from the Bay Area and Southern California, a floor plan paired with a 3D tour is often the entire first showing. A measured plan tells them the layout works; the 3D tour lets them walk it; the video walkthrough shows them how it feels. Together they turn a four-hour drive into a confirmation visit instead of a fact-finding mission.
